Help the Ch’aqui Potrero indigenous community with their tree nursery so they can replant their threatened forest for the endangered Cochabamba Mountain-Finch
Replant a threatened forest. Save an endangered species. Support a poor and marginalized indigenous community. This is the aim of the Cochabamba Mountain-Finch appeal.
The Cochabamba Mountain-Finch (Poospiza garleppi) is an Endangered species, whose population stronghold is in Cordillera de Cochabamba of central Bolivia. It is found nowhere else on Earth.
By supporting the Ch’aqui Potrero indigenous community to produce and plant rare trees, we can help save the species from extinction and improve the livelihoods of the people.

What’s the threat?
The Cochabamba Mountain-Finch is in decline because of the widespread destruction of its threatened Polylepis forests.
The team at Armonía have already helped the Ch’aqui Potrero community create the first tree nursery that produces the threatened Polylepis subtusalbida species. This is the only place where saplings of this tree species are produced, so the community has become an important provider for habitat restoration projects across the region.
Since 2013, the community have produced about 5,500 saplings for reforestation campaigns in three indigenous community areas. We want to see their success flourish.
How can we help?
We will support them in the production of at least 5,000 saplings of the rare Polylepis subtusalbida, to plant within the forest fragments of the San Miguel indigenous community.
This will not only expand the key habitat for the Cochabamba Mountain-Finch and other threatened bird species, but also create a much needed extra income for the poor community of Ch’aqui Potrero.
To make this happen, we need to raise US$20,000 to pay for:
Collection of seeds and seedlings
Production of saplings
Wage for a community member to run the nursery
Transportation costs of saplings from Ch’aqui Potrero to San Miguel
Reforestation work
Monitoring the development of the saplings during the first year
This funding will also help the community generate more money to support development projects that protect and conserve their environment, while providing them with an extra alternative income to improve their livelihoods and living standards.
