30 Years of Armonía
Three Decades Conserving Biodiversity and Transforming Communities
For 30 years, Armonía has been conserving Bolivia’s most threatened bird species alongside the communities that share their habitats. These achievements include doubling the population of the Blue-throated Macaw, reversing the population decline of the Red-fronted Macaw, restoring more than 1.3 million native seedlings across the Andes, and securing the protection of 1.3 million hectares through new subnational protected areas designed with practical, sustainable management plans. Every initiative begins with real needs identified in local communities and grows to encompass entire landscapes, integrating science, conservation, and sustainable local development.
Across all of its programs, Armonía promotes initiatives that strengthen conservation while creating sustainable livelihoods: birdwatching tourism as a growing economic sector, support for the creation of the Beni Sustainable Ranching Alliance, which promotes environmentally friendly livestock practices across the Llanos de Moxos, agroforestry systems, honey and coffee production, and other community-based enterprises. These efforts are complemented by environmental education and awareness programs, together with innovative financial mechanisms that help ensure long-term sustainability. In addition, we work with more than 10 local organizations to strengthen their capacity to manage their territories sustainably and develop productive initiatives that improve local livelihoods. These experiences are being replicated across Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), helping build a future where conservation and community well-being advance hand in hand.

Thirty Years of Armonía: A Chronicle from the Founding Vision to a Lasting Legacy
We invite you to explore Armonía’s history and discover the moments, people, and decisions that have shaped 30 years of conservation work. From the organization’s earliest days to the challenges and achievements of today, discover the people who have been part of this journey. A defining chapter began in 2002, when the organization was refounded by Bennett Hennessey and Sebastián Herzog. They assumed the roles of Executive and Scientific Directors and took on the challenge of rebuilding the institution from the ground up, reorganizing its administration, and establishing a new institutional structure. Discover how the vision of a group of people passionate about nature became a long-term mission to protect Bolivia’s biodiversity.
