Tucuman Parrot (Amazona tucumana) by Paul B. Jones

The first checklist on eBird for the Tucuman Parrot Nature Reserve reveals the extraordinary avifauna of this humid area of mixed Tucuman and Cloud Forests of southern Bolivia. Dozens of Tucuman Parrots, four species of warbling finches, Giant Antshrike, wrens, and hummingbirds are enough highlights to make the Reserve a teasing birdwatching hotspot, only  5 hours drive from Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Armonía development director Bennett Hennessey and reserve coordinator Tjalle Boorsma set out to the Tucuman Parrot Nature Reserve for some pleasant Sunday reconnaissance birding on the 18th of February.

Situated in the unique middle ground between the more southern Tucuman Forest and the the exuberantly diverse Yungas (Cloud forest), the reserve harbors a important Tucuman Parrot (Amazona tucumana) population and a wealth of other wildlife.

The 5 hours-long birding yielded a total of 38 species, amongst those 25 tucuman Parrots, rusty-browed-, ringed-, and black-capped, black and rufous warbling finches, a Giant Antshrike.

eBird is an essential tool to showcase this birding hotspot. With this checklist we can highlight the Tucuman Parrot Reserve to the birding community for the first time. Birders will know about the reserve, tourism will bring in much needed alternative incomes and therefore more support for  the protection of the species.

-said Bennett Hennessy.

If we can prove to locals that birding tourism can be turned into a sustainable long-term income, we ultimately will save the species.

The Tucuman Parrot Nature Reserve was created to protect a large Tucuman Parrot  breeding site just outside of the Quirusillas Muncipal reserve.

With Armonia’s great success in nest box breeding for the Blue-throated Macaw, Armonia will develop a similar nest box program in this area for the Tucuman Parrot. As we are learning, large nest cavities are a rare commodity in a human impacted environment.

The program urgently needs support to fund the ongoing protection of the Tucumán Parrot Nature Reserve, to continue the nest box program, to conduct nationwide education programed on the illegal trade that continues in Bolivia.
