HELP SAVE RED-FRONTED MACAWS FROM EXTINCTION

Red-fronted Macaw Conservation at Work

The Red-fronted Macaw Reserve is truly an important place for the conservation of many Bolivian species. But making sure the area is well protected requires support from people like you who understand the value of nature and wild places.

With the support of the indigenous communities of San Carlos, Perereta, and Amaya, Asociación Armonía established the 50 hectare (124 acre) Red-fronted Macaw Reserve in 2006. It protects the largest known breeding colony of the Critically Endangered and endemic Red-fronted Macaw in the world. But this is just the first step in securing the future of the species, while empowering local indigenous people.

Your impact as a Friend of Frente Roja

There are just over 1000 Red-fronted Macaws left in the wild. The species is threatened by the destruction of habitat, poaching to supply the illegal pet trade, and persecution by local farmers for eating their crops (maize and peanuts). We know that we must create behavior change across Bolivia to tackle the illegal pet trade and the persecution of the macaw.

To overcome this problem and successfully achieve community engagement, we have directly linked nature’s protection with improved living standards and livelihoods. The empowerment of the Bolivian people is central to our mission. By co-running the Reserve with local communities, we are empowering the people and demonstrating how nature’s protection can improve living standards and livelihoods.

Your support will go directly to protecting this species through: Running educational campaigns to tackle poaching for the illegal pet trade, and generating alternative incomes for local and indigenous communities (beekeeping and honey production, pest control techniques, etc.)

How to become a Friend of Frente Roja

“Friends of Frente Roja” is a group of individuals who have committed to assisting in our protection efforts. They receive an annual report, including our financial report and the next year’s management budget. Many of our friends have also assisted us with conservation ideas, contacts and educational materials.

To become a Friend of Frente Roja, ideally we request a yearly donation of US$10,000, with a minimal donation of US$2,000. Please contact Bennett Hennessey, Director of Development (abhennessey@armonia-bo.org) for questions and if you are interested in becoming a Friend of Frente Roja.

Your donation can be made through American Bird Conservancy’s Armonía donation page: https://act.abcbirds.org/a/donate-armonia.
